Infant critically injured in car fire; mother may face charges

ROLLA, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The mother of an infant may face charges after her baby was critically injured in a car fire Thursday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri.

“I had a hard time sleeping last night,” said Gina Coffman, who works at the Papa Murphy's Pizza in Rolla. “Every time I close my eyes, I keep seeing that poor baby.”

Coffman says the mother of the infant came into the restaurant, ordered a pizza, and waited about 15 minutes for the food. While the mother was waiting for the pizza, that's when the fire started.

“I heard screaming and I looked at the door and I saw the same young lady coming in the door with a baby in her arms in black soot,” Coffman said. “She [the mother] kept saying, ‘I knew I blew the candle out. I knew I blew the candle out.'”

The mother of the infant claims a candle in the car started the fire after the flames hit numerous lottery tickets. However, officers with the Rolla Police Department would not confirm if a candle was inside the car.

The investigation into the cause of the fire is still ongoing. Police say the mother could face child endangerment charges.
