SAPPINGTON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The former treasurer of a parent teacher organization is accused of stealing nearly $35,000 and skipping town with the money.

Court documents reveal that 33 year old Winifred Wright is accused of stealing $34,710 from June of 2011 to June of 2014 while she was treasurer of the Sappington Elementary Parent Teacher Group.

"It's terrible to think that money was intended for our students and our teachers and used for someone's personal gain," says Beth Johnston who spoke on behalf of the PTG.

Money raised by the organization is used for student events and field trips.

A police report on the incident showed that Wright disappeared last June and while her husband at the time didn't know where she was, he later disappeared in November.

Johnston says the Sappington PTG has now put in place monetary safeguards to prevent anyone from stealing money from the organization again.
