JUPITER, FL (Baseball STL) —Mike Matheny announced this morning Carlos Martinez will start for the Cardinals in their Grapefruit League opener this Thursday against the Marlins at Roger Dean Stadium.
“(Martinez) is excited to take the ball. He wants to show what he can do,” Matheny said.
This will be the second consecutive season Martinez will get the ball in the first game of spring training. A year ago the right-handed pitcher was in competition with Joe Kelly for an opening in the starting rotation but ended up getting sent to the bullpen to begin the year.
The expectation is that won’t happen again this time around.
Tyler Lyons will throw in relief of Martinez on Thursday. Both will be limited to around 30-40 pitches which is typical for a first appearance of spring.
