Wentzville, Mo. (KMOV) - Police in St. Charles County say a man fatally shot himself after running his vehicle off Highway 61 Sunday night.

Police on the scene say the incident happened around 7:45 Sunday night along Highway 61 near North Pointe Prairie Road.

When Battalion Chief Jeremy Hollrah, who was very close to the scene, arrived at the accident scene, several vehicles were on the side of the road and a black pickup truck was at an odd angle at the edge of a wooded area near the roadway. When Hollrah approached the vehicle, he saw the driver searching for something inside the car. Hollrah instructed the driver to exit his vehicle, citing safety concerns. The driver then pointed a gun at Hollrah, police say.

After the gun was pointed at Hollrah, the officer backed away from the truck and the driver fired one shot.

Wentzville police arrived shortly after the shot was fired and said the driver of the truck was dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
