(KMOV.com) – Authorities said they are investigating after a 5-month-old girl suffered brain damage and later died.
Authorities told News 4 paramedics were called to a home in 800 block of Larkin Drive Monday, where a man, woman, and their two children live.
“They arrived and found a 5-month-old infant was unresponsive and lethargic,” said Captain Kevin Sullivan with Pevely police.
Police said the father and the two children were home at the time, the mother was at work. The father told police he walked out of the room where the 5-month-old was for only moment. When he came back, he said he found his 17-month-old son sitting on the younger infant. Authorities said his story is inconsistent with the victim’s injuries.
“Brain trauma, numerous bruising, had seven broken ribs, only one is a new fracture,” said Sullivan.
The victim was flown to Children’s Hospital in St. Louis. Doctors said they found six previous fractures in various states of healing. The girl was injured so badly she was placed on life support. The family ordered the girl to be take off life support Friday. Even though police have not arrested any suspects, they took steps to protect the couple’s other child.
“The following day, our department and children’s division took custody of the older son,” Sullivan said.
Police said the parents initially cooperative but have since hired an attorney. Investigators said they hope to conclude the investigation soon, chargers may be filed next week.
