JUPITER, FL (Baseball STL) -- Rain was in the forecast for today and rain is what came to Roger Dean Stadium. There’s been a steady downpour since the early morning and it hasn’t let up as the time has approached noon here in Florida.
But just because the field is wet that by no means suggests the Cardinals will pack it in and waste today.
“That’s the whole point. We’re not going to lose this day. We hope to get everything we were going to get accomplished out there (outside) inside. We’re going to do something a little different today,” manager Mike Matheny said.
And by different he means maximizing space all over the complex. They’ll use the weight room, they’ll use the multi-purpose room which is usually for meetings. They’ll hit in the cages. Those needing treatment will be with the trainers.
But what makes this really different is guys are going to do conditioning and agility drills in the hallways. For example, they’re having players pull sleds down the hall. Matheny joked they’ll have to close some doors and have people stand guard to make sure no one gets knocked over.
There will still be some guys go onto the field to play catch so their arms stay strong. But that’ll be the only activities taking place outdoors on this rainy Friday in Jupiter, Florida.
