ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A 16-year-old will be tried as an adult in connection with the hammer death of a Bosnian immigrant in the Bevo Mill neighborhood.

Authorities said 16-year-old Darrion Johner was certified to stand trial as an adult Monday evening. He and 17-year-old Robert Mitchell are accused of beating Zemir Begic, 32, to death in late November. In total, four suspects have been arrested.

“This crime is extremely heinous, it’s extremely gruesome and I think it’s appropriate for them to stand trial as adults,” St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce said shortly after the attack.

Johner is charged with first degree murder.

The attack spawned a spontaneous protest in the Bevo neighborhood.
