ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Car thefts are not only on the rise across St. Louis City, and it’s a common crime officers are having to deal with, but in the last year, it’s a crime that has increased more than 50 percent in the Dutchtown neighborhood.

Cars line the streets of Dutchtown, where the same story is told dozens of times.

“I woke up and I found out my car was stolen,” Dutchtown resident Sondra Block said. “I just couldn't believe it because it was all we had.”

Block, like so many other victims, learned they’d have to front the bill to get the car back. Block’s charges totaled $600.

“We were victims and I just don’t feel that we should have to pay this charge,” Block said.

Vehicle thefts in Dutchtown have increased more than 30 percent in just the last month compared to this time last year.
