ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A woman was transported to the hospital with burns to her face after a south St. Louis house fire Wednesday.

A two-story home in the 3500 block of Pennsylvania caught fire around 11:30 a.m. Firefighters said three kids were inside at the time. According to firefighters, the youngest of the three kids were playing with a lighter and accidentally to a bed. The oldest child, who was watching the younger two, tried to put the fire out, but the blaze spread

The children and man were able to safely exit the house at the time of the blaze. The mother of the children drove up to house as the fire broke out and ran inside to retrieve her kids, believing they were still inside, but they had already made it out safely. Firefighters said they tried to stop her, but couldn't.

Firefighters told News 4 the woman's act of opening the front door to go inside allowed more oxygen to feed the fire. The home is badly damaged.
