ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A man who was wrongly arrested by St. Ann police fears an officer may have stolen his personal belongings.
A St. Ann officer arrested Richard Stewart after a witness wrongly identified him as suspect in a crime. Stewart was arrested and held in St. Ann’s jail until officers determined he was not a suspect. Stewart said there was confusion when he called the jail to ask for his personal items back.
“He said ‘I can’t find your stuff’ and said he searched everywhere. This is before I spoke to the chief,” Stewart said. “This should never come up. I should be able to call them and say I can come get my property. They should be able to find it... Honestly, at this point I believe somebody stole it.”
St. Ann Police Chief Aaron Jimenez said Stewart’s items are missing, but does not believe they were stolen. Jimenez also said an officer violated department policy when he put Stewart’s items in the wrong room.
“He went to the roll call room and put the property down but at that point he doesn’t remember anything after that,” Jimenez said.
Jimenez said the items were last seen in the roll call room. Jimenez told News 4 his staff will look at surveillance cameras, but there are no such cameras in the roll call room.
