ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – St. Louis police and prosecutors are searching for new ways to fight crime in the city and their first stop is Kansas City, Missouri.
Several years ago, Kansas City officials began the "No-Violence Alliance" program (NOVA). The NOVA program takes a different approach to fighting crime by targeting the city’s most violent offenders and offers them a chance to work with law enforcement. In exchange, they get job training, drug treatment, and other help to turn their lives around.
"After one of our call-ins, we did have an individual who reached back out to us [and told us] he knew of a violent act that was about to happen,” said Jackson County Prosecutor Jean Peters. “He wanted to notify us, told us who the players were, and we were able to prevent that act from happening.”
Since the NOVA program was started, violent crimes have dropped in Kansas City.
