ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Interstate 270 will be closed in both direction from Route 3 to Riverview Boulevard starting at 10:00 a.m.  Thursday while crews demolish the final portion of the Chain of Rocks Canal Bridge.

Throughout the past month, the Illinois Department of Transportation has demolished the eastbound and westbound sides of the bridge. Thursday’s demolition will remove the final sections of the bridge left standing after the previous explosions.

As a precaution, traffic in both directions of the replacement Interstate 270 bridge will be closed for roughly two hours beginning at 10 a.m. Westbound traffic during that time will be diverted to Illinois Route 3, and eastbound traffic will be directed to exit at St. Louis’ Riverview Boulevard.
The canal is a channel used by barge traffic to bypass rocky Mississippi River shallows.
