FRANKLIN COUNTY(KMOV.com) – A man who allegedly ran over his estranged wife with a car got into a five-hour standoff with police at his home in Franklin County.
Police said James Fitzgerald ran over his estranged wife with a car before they tracked him down at his home along Meadow Drive in Catawissa. Police said they proceeded with caution during the standoff because Fitzgerald was armed with a rifle and told others he would get in a shootout if he felt it was necessary.
A man who lives next door to Fitzgerald told News 4 his family hid in the basement before police told them to leave the house.
“I went down to the basement with my wife and my granddaughter and when I came back up, I said ‘I better go back up there because they might knock on the door again,” the neighbor said. “Sure enough they were knocking by the time I got up and they told us to get out.”
After five hours, police said Fitzgerald surrendered peacefully. He has been charged with felony assault. Police said his estranged wife is recovering.
