PLATTE COUNTY, MO (KCTV) - A 12-year-old boy is recovering after he shot himself in the leg while he was home alone with his younger sister on Presidents Day.
Capt. Erik Holland of the Platte County Sheriff's Office said they received a call for a shooting in the 12000 block of Farmers Lane in rural Platte County. When deputies arrived, they found the 12-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to his upper leg. The boy was playing with a .45-caliber handgun and the gun discharged, striking him in the leg, Holland said.
The captain said the boy and his 9-year-old sister were the only ones inside the residence when the shooting occurred around 12:45 p.m.
KCTV5 attempted to reach the family but they were not home, and neighbors declined comment on Monday night.
The incident remains under investigation by the sheriff's department. Holland said that once the investigation concludes they will pass it on to the Platte County Prosecutor's Office. The investigation will determine how the boy got ahold of the gun, including whether it was safely stored.
As required by law, deputies will also alert Missouri social workers.
