CHICAGO (AP) -- Illinois State Police say about 40 vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash amid slippery conditions on a major Chicago expressway.
A series of vehicles slammed into each other after the initial accident occurred after 10 a.m. Sunday on the Kennedy Expressway near the downtown Ohio exit.
Police say a dozen people were taken to local hospitals with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, and 59 others refused medical treatment.
Firefighters temporarily closed inbound traffic as they cleared the accident scene. Police say all lanes on the Kennedy Expressway have reopened since the incident.
A light snow began to fall in Chicago earlier Sunday. Weather officials reported low visibility and icy conditions in some area.
