ALTON, Ill. (KMOV.com) -- Police and residents are on alert after cars were broken into outside of the Club Fitness in Alton during the morning gym rush.
Early Tuesday morning, eight victims returned to their vehicles after their workouts to see their passenger windows smashed in and their doors unlocked in the parking lot of Club Fitness on Homer Adams Parkway.
Earlier this month, eleven break-ins occurred in another part of town, where the thieves punched out door locks to disable them.
Alton Police believe the suspects came across the river from St. Louis to commit what officials are calling crimes of opportunity.
Victims of the break-ins had purses and electronics stolen, which police say residents can avoid by keeping valuables out of sight and leaving purses out of sight.
Police plan to increase area patrols and review surveillance video.
