Red Cross assists 23 individuals after late night apartment complex fire

SHREWSBURY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The Red Cross said it helped 23 individuals after a a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Shrewsbury Monday night.

The blaze broke out in the 7100 block of Murdoch, very close to the line separating St. Louis from St. Louis County.  Firefighters believe a mattress in a basement storage unit caught fire, before spreading to other parts of the building.

One resident told News 4 a neighbor knocked on doors to make sure everyone got out safely.

In total, six different fire departments responded.

Nobody was injured during the fire. 

The Red Cross said they were at the scene of the fire and assisted the individuals while crews worked to contain the blaze. They say they helped 9 people with hotel rooms for the night and asssited all 23 individuals food and clothing.

 

A temporary warming shelter was set up for displaced residents at a nearby bowling alley.
