RICHMOND HEIGHTS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A fugitive was found hiding in a home in Richmond Heights three weeks after leaving Iowa, where he was wanted for murder.

The suspect, 24-year-old Dustin McDanel, convinced a childhood friend to let him stay in his apartment on Yale Avenue in Richmond Heights.

McDanel traveled over 250 miles from his home near Ottumwa, Iowa to the residence, which is owned by the friend's mother. The mother said she had no idea her son's friend was a fugitive.

Lieutenant Jason Bell of Ottumwa Police Department said they found McDanel "hiding underneath a bed inside the basement area of the house."

The mother of the friend does not face charges, but the friend could be charged with hindering prosecution.

McDanel has been extradited to Iowa, where he is expected to face murder charges.
