GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV) -- A student who brought a handgun to Granite City High School on Thursday has been charged.
The student is a 17-year-old made and he is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon in juvenile court. Since he is a juvenile his name has not been released.
Around 9:40 a.m., school officials were tipped off by a student that another student had a gun at the school. The school resource officer, and other faculty members, took the student into custody without incident.
School officials say the gun was found on the student and ammunition was in his backpack. It was not loaded and there were no know threats from the student.
The student told school officials that he felt he needed the gun for protection.
