Thieves targeted a Family Dollar store in South City's Bevo neighborhood twice over the past week and harmed a store employee in the most recent attempt.
In both of the robberies, the thieves loaded trash cans inside the store with goods to steal, including laundry detergent and Febreze air freshener.
When the suspects made their escape from the store on Gravois Boulevard, they shoved one store employee out of the way and threatened another with a knife.
Alderman Carol Howard said more police are patrolling the area after the unusual details of the crimes became known.
"It's terrible. I am glad the police are doing more as far as patrolling," said Tom Horton, a resident of the area.
After a recent uptick in crime in the Bevo area mid-December of last year, residents were told a police substation would be put into the Bosnian Chamber of Commerce.
The substation has still not opened, but officials say it should open in the next week or two.
Suspects from the robberies are still on the run.
