Vaughn: Nations second ranked recruit picks Mizzou
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (Mizzou Football App)- Terry Beckner, Jr. had a choice of virtually every major college football program in the country. On Wednesday morning he chose Missouri.
“It’s just where my heart told me to go,” said Beckner. “I felt more comfortable there.”
Beckner is the number two rated prospect in the nation according to ESPN.com. He had narrowed his list of finalists to Mizzou, Florida State, Ohio State and Auburn. His parents won’t have a long drive to Columbia to watch him play for the Tigers, but he said that’s not really why he chose Mizzou.
“They can go there and watch,” said Beckner. “But if I would have gone to Florida it wouldn’t have been a problem. It’s just where I feel the most comfortable.”
“Regardless of where he would have picked, I would have been there,” said his mother Jermaya Beckner. “It wasn’t a matter of that. I let him pick the school. He felt like part of the family when he went up there to visit last weekend.”
Beckner is a 6’5”, 298 pound defensive lineman. He had 116 tackles in his senior season and 22 sacks. He was a two time All Metro selection in the St. Louis area, and a two time Max Prep All America.
Beckner is hoping to add his name to the growing list of Mizzou defensive linemen who have made it the NFL in recent years; Ziggy Hood, Kony Ealy, Sheldon Richardson, Aldon Smith. Markus Golden and Shane Ray are expected to be early round picks in this year’s draft.
“Terry can be as good as he wants to be,” said his East St. Louis High school coach Darren Sunkett. “The better the competition, the better Terry is going to be.”
