ELSBERRY, Mo. (KMOV) – Four people were critically injured Friday evening after a train hit their vehicle in Elsberry, Missouri.

According to authorities, the accident happened around 7:15 p.m. near the railroad crossing at DuBois and Main streets just south of Route P.

Police said Craig Lyons, 45, his wife, Beth, 43, and children, Cassie, 16, and Jacob, 10, were all injured in the collision.  Lyons and his wife were air-lifted to St. John's hospital.  The children were transported to St. Joseph West hospital by ambulance.  All victims are listed in critical condition.

The family was believed to be traveling back to their home in O'Fallon, Missouri at the time of the collision.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation, but officers believe Lyons drove his minivan into the path of the train when he tried to get around another train that was stopped on the tracks.
