Crews restoring power to thousands in Missouri

CHILLICOTHE, Mo. (AP) -- Utility crews are gradually restoring power to thousands of people in Missouri and Kansas left in the dark by two rounds of heavy thunderstorms.

Kansas City Power & Light, which serves Kansas and Missouri, says about 65,000 customers were affected by the storm systems that rolled through late Sunday and early Monday. As of late Monday afternoon, the utility said fewer than 13,000 remained without electricity.

In eastern and northern Missouri, St. Louis-based Ameren Missouri reported about 12,000 were still without power at 4:30 p.m. Monday, down from more than 38,000 Monday morning. Adair and St. Louis counties accounted for most of the remaining outages.

It was reported that high winds forced one driver into a ditch in the northwest Missouri's Chillicothe and destroyed a fireworks tent.
