A Jerseyville man was pronounced dead at the scene of a single-car accident shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday after he was ejected from the car he was driving. His passenger was transported to Jersey Community Hospital with minor injuries.
According to an Illinois State Police District 18 report, Douglas L. Powers, 25, was driving west on McClusky Road approaching Bartlett Road at a high rate of speed. Powers lost control of his 2000 Chrysler LHS and traveled through the intersection. The car left the road and struck a ditch embankment, then overturned several times before coming to rest on its roof.
Powers was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car. His passenger, Matthew A. Friedel, 23, also of Jerseyville, was wearing a seat belt. An ARCH Air Medical Service Inc. helicopter was contacted, then canceled, by authorities at the scene.
