East St. Louis is getting aggressive in fighting crime

In 2009, East St. Louis Police investigated 27 murders. Three of those murders happened in November when three women were gun down at a gas station. Since then Mayor Alvin Parks has started a new crime fighting initiative. The plan has forced officers to make extra patrols, conduct street sweeps to get the guns off the streets, and police have called in U-S Marshals and Illinois State Police to help with this effort. Even though crimes with guns seem to be decreasing, domestic violence is increasing.  Mayor Parks says the police department is currently working with churches in the area to help deter this second violent trend. Moving forward the East St. Louis Police Department will have to continue to rely on mutual aid (U-S Marshals and Illinois State Police) to fight violent crime.
