There was silence in the visitors’ locker room at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Ill., following Saturday’s contest between Illinois and Northwestern. The Fighting Illini had just suffered their third consecutive loss — the latest coming at the hands of the Wildcats.
Freshman guard D.J. Richardson explained the ensuing silence.
“Everyone just came in the locker room, and everyone’s just basically head was down like, ‘Wow. Why did we lose this game?’” Richardson said. “It wasn’t in a bad way that we didn’t talk to each other, but it was in a way that everyone’s quiet, like we (were) all just shocked that we lost to Northwestern.”
