Metro-East firefighters dodge exploding ammo

ALTON - Firefighters had to contend with exploding ammunition Wednesday as they battled a blaze in the basement of a well-known gunsmith's home.

The Alton Fire Department responded at 4:07 p.m. to a call reporting a fire in the basement of 2505 Kohler St., Assistant Chief David Eichen said. He said the homeowner, Walter Kaus, had gone to a neighbor's house to report the fire, and the neighbor called 911.

"Upon arrival, we were immediately warned by the neighbor that the owner of the house is a gunsmith and all of his works were in the basement where the fire originated," Eichen said. "Upon pulling hose to the house, there were rounds of ammunition going off in the basement.
