(KMOV) -- A woman died in a house fire despite her husband’s desperate attempt to save her.

The fire broke out late Monday night in Lemay at a home in the 2300 block of Rose Garden Drive.

Firefighters say Rudolph Cook came home around 11:30 p.m. to find his house burning.

Police say he rushed inside to try to save his wife 60-year-old wife Diane, but the fire was too powerful forced him back outside.

Friends of the couple told News 4 that Diane was a sweet woman.

Police tell us that Rudolph was taken to a local hospital where he is being treated for serious burns.

Firefighters are still trying to figure out what caused the fire.
