ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- Officials in Alton are unsure of the fate of an early 19th-century building that was destroyed by a fire earlier this week.
Alton Fire Chief Greg Bock says no injuries were reported in the fire at The Mansion House.
The 1834 building has served as a hospital, hotel and boarding school, among other things.
Fire officials have ruled out arson, but the cause remains under investigation.
One of the building's owners, Christine Velloff, says the building is a loss of history, but it's good that no one was hurt.
An official with the Alton Area Landmarks Association says if the building is demolished it'll be a shame.
