(KMOV) -- Firefighters say the historic Mansion House in Alton, Illinois is a total loss a fire ripped through the building on Thursday evening.

It happened around 7:15 p.m. in the 500 block of State Street.

This fire not only destroyed an historic house, but flames chased the people in the building's four apartments out of their homes.

The Alton fire chief called fighting this fire a losing battle from the beginning and firefighters tell News 4 that this two-alarm fire was incredibly difficult to fight.

The Mansion House was engulfed in flames for more than three hours and burned from bottom to top.

The historic location dates back to 1834 when it opened as Alton's first hotel.

The State Street landmark became a boarding house and then St. Joseph's Hospital.

Most recently, it was used as a four-unit apartment building.

No word yet on how many people lived here, but we're told everyone made it out safely.

The cause of the fire is undetermined. But firefighters say it is not suspicious. Since the building basically fell on itself, it would be too dangerous to determine a cause.
