MEHLVILLE (KMOV.com) – Police have identified an alleged shoplifter was tased by police before an officer-involved shooting in the parking lot of a South County Kmart store Tuesday morning.

Police were dispatched to the Kmart of Lemay Ferry Road, near Lindbergh, after Duianete Moore, 33, from the 200 block of Olympia, allegedly walked out of the store with more than $30,000 in stolen jewelry.  Police said Moore walked into the store with a screw driver, opened the jewelry case, grabbed the jewelry and attempted to flee.

Police say when they arrived on the scene, Moore was running across the parking lot.  Police began chasing Moore to his vehicle.  Once inside the suspect’s vehicle, a struggle ensued between the officer and Moore.  The officer, who is a 16 year veteran of the department, used a taser twice, but that didn’t stop Moore, a spokesman for the St. Louis County Police Department said.  Shortly after, a gunshot went off inside the vehicle, grazing the suspect in the leg.

The officer sustained minor injuries to his back, hip and shoulder during the struggle.  He and Moore were taken to a local hospital where they were treated and released.

Moore is being charged with second degree assault on law enforcement.

Police said Moore is a known shoplifter across St. Louis County and is believed to have stolen from another Kmart two weeks ago.  At that robbery, police said he stole electronics.
