(KMOV.com) -- A tanker truck overturned on Route 4 north of Marissa, Illinois in St. Clair County Sunday morning and the road did not reopen until the evening.
The accident happened at about 5:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of Route 4. Officials said the truck was traveling southbound when it was involved in an accident, causing the truck to roll onto its side.
Emergency management officials said 4,000-5,000 gallons of fuel spilled onto the roadway and almost five gallons of fuel poured out of the tanker every minute. The fuel went across the road and into part of a farm field.
Officials said the spill has been contained. Hazmat crews and several agencies were on scene.
Route 4 reopened Sunday evening as crews were able to lift the tanker on its side with the help of a tow truck.
