St. Louis Police Department creates new force to investigate officer-involved shootings

(KMOV.com) -- The St. Louis Police Department has announced a new approach to investigating its own police involved shootings.
A special unit will be assigned to investigate shootings that either injure or kill a person.
News 4 first heard about this plan last month when Chief Sam Dotson answered questions about the shooting of a man armed with a knife in north St. Louis. At that time, the chief said the unit was being formed even before the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson.
Officials said the Police Officers Union supports the idea.
The Force Investigation Unit will operate separately from the Internal Affairs Department, which investigates cases in which an officer is accused of any kind of wrong-doing.
