(BaseballStL) – For the second time in his career, Adam Wainwright reached the 20 win mark. And as baseball experts shy away from the win-loss statistic, it’s still hard to deny the success of a 20-win starter.
Wainwright’s 20th win came during a tight pennant race as the Pittsburgh Pirates remain 2.5 games back for the race for first place. The only other MLB pitcher with 20 wins is, of course, the Dodger’s Clayton Kershaw.
The Cardinals offense helped Wainwright and the bullpen record their 22nd shutout of the season as they poured 8 runs onto the rival Chicago Cubs. They scored four runs in the fourth on five straight hits and another three runs in the fifth.
Jon Jay and Matt Adams collected five RBI collectively as every starts, but Wainwright, recorded at least one hit on the night. And a seven run lead isn't something Wainwright squanders.
Wainwright fanned eight more batters Monday night to bring his three game total to 31. Weeks ago, the Cardinals’ ace said he was experiencing arm fatigue. It seems pretty safe to say he’s move out of that funk. He allowed one walk and three hits in his 7.0 innings of work.
With the win, the Cardinals were unable to gain any ground on the Pirates as they beat the Braves 1-0, but the magic number for the division title did shrink down to four.
