ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The uncle and his girlfriend are in custody after a 4-year-old boy was shot by his 5-year-old cousin Thursday night.
According to police, the boy had to undergo surgery after he was shot in the stomach at 9:10 p.m. in the 5900 block of Oakherst.
Police say the victim and his 5-year-old cousin were playing in the uncle’s apartment when they found a gun. According to police, the 5-year-old fired a shot which hit the victim in the abdomen.
The victim’s mother was at the residence when she heard the gunshot and entered the apartment to find her son had suffered a gunshot wound.
Investigators say the boy’s mother and father drove him to the hospital where he was treated for the wound and is currently listed in stable, guarded condition.
The hospital contacted authorities when the child arrived at the emergency room.
Authorities said when the toddler arrived at the hospital, the family told them the child somehow got ahold of a gun and shot himself.
The boy’s 24-year-old uncle and his 22-year-old girlfriend were taken into custody for endangering the welfare of a child.
Police say they have not located the gun.
The investigation is ongoing.
