ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two separate robberies occurring in the Central West End neighborhood led investigators to a female suspect who used mace as her weapon of choice.

20-year-old Averia Smith was arrested Tuesday. Police said the incidents occurred along West Pine Street where Smith blinded her victims with mace, and then, snatched their purse. Police said at least two separate incidents occurred over the last few days.

“When you think of mace you think of it as a protectant, so when someone is using it against other people for a bad thing, it’s really sad,” said one Central West End resident.

“You usually hear it’s men going around, so … be aware of everyone. You never know, I guess,” added another resident.

The victims did get their belongings back.

Smith is being charged with two counts of robbery and is held on a $75,000 bond.
