CRESTWOOD, Mo. (KMOV) – A professional kickboxer and mixed martial arts fighter from St. Louis is being credited with thwarting a shoplifting attempt at a Crestwood grocery store on Friday.
Jesse Finney said he was picking up chocolate for his wife at the Crestwood Schnuck’s around 7 p.m. when he noticed a female employee running after a man.
Finney said he grabbed the man by the coat and slammed him to the ground. He then put him in a hold until Crestwood police arrived, according to Finney.
Finney said the man had stashed several bottles of vodka down his shirt before trying to leave the store. One of those bottles smashed when the suspect hit the ground.
Crestwood police on Wednesday said they could not comment on the case until the police report was reviewed.
But a Schnuck’s loss prevention specialist confirmed a customer apprehended a suspected shoplifter inside the store.
Finney, a trained professional boxer and MMA fighter, said while he’s never encountered such an incident before, he was prepared to step in.
He has coached for Chuck Norris’ World Combat League and was featured on Showtime’s Strikeforce.
Finney holds a 23-0 kickboxing record, a boxing record of 8-2, a professional MMA record of 6-1 and an amateur MMA record of 4-0.
He trains several fighters in boxing, mixed martial arts, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing and wrestling at Finney’s MMA/All in 1 Fitness at 9744 Watson Rd. in Crestwood.
