Winter Wonderland closed due to high winds

ST. LOUIS ( -- Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, St. Louis County Parks officials decided to close Winter Wonderland in Tilles Park due to winds in excess of 50 miles per hour.

Officials had previously announced the cancelation of carriage rides.

In a statement issued at 3 p.m., special events coordinator Maggie Kenny announced that  after consultation with Park staff and the carriage ride company, Brookdale Farms, the safest course of action was to cancel the rides for Thursday.

The high winds cause the lights to swing in the trees, which can upset the horses.

“The horses that have become used to a passive environment while pulling carriages throughout the park and may become distracted by the wind-blown lights in the trees.” said. Kenny. “In order to ensure that our Winter Wonderland guests enjoy to the fullest their carriage rides, Brookdale Farms and St. Louis County Parks have determined the carriage rides should be canceled for the evening. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Initially, officials reported vehicles will still be permitted to visit the popular holiday attraction, but shortly before 5 p.m. it was announced the entire area would be closed to the public.

Those who have scheduled carriage rides are encouraged to contact Metrotix in order to reschedule their rides on a later date or receive a refund. Metrotix can be reached at 314-534-1111 or
