DIXON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two inmates at the Dixon County Jail are facing additional charges after a brief escape led to a burglary Monday night.

Dixon police notified the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office that a pair of county inmates, 23-year-old Joseph Clayton Esparza and 23-year-old Brandon Kelly Monell, had escaped from their jail around 2:30 a.m. Monday.

According to reports, about 30 minutes later, a deputy was notified that a robbery had occurred at a home in the 18000 block of Burlington Road in the Crocker area.

Deputies responded to the scene and the occupants of the residence provided a description of the suspects to the officers. Authorities determined the two men described by the residents were likely Esparza and Monell.

Authorities said around 3:25 a.m., a Pulaski County deputy advised dispatch that they had Esparza located in an abandoned house. He was later taken into custody. Monell was last seen running back toward Dixon.

A follow-up investigation at the Dixon City Jail indicated the two suspects had escaped from the building around 11:18 p.m. Sunday when a third inmate distracted the on-duty dispatcher.

Monell was taken into custody from a residence south of Crocker around 9:45 a.m.. Monell, was charged with escape from confinement, a class D felony and burglary first degree, a class B felony.

Esparza was charged with the same two offenses. The bond on both was set at $100,000 and they are now held in the Pulaski County Jail.
