(KMOV) – AT&T on Monday announced it will provide faster Internet to some parts of the St. Louis area.
The company said homes and businesses would see speeds of up to one gigabit per second. According to AT&T, movies could be downloaded in 30 seconds, which is a similar speed to the Google Fiber network that is currently being built near Kansas City.
The Internet provider is currently holding talks with St. Louis, Chesterfield, Florissant, Granite City and Edwardsville about building the necessary infrastructure to expand the fiber optic network.
“Once we come to come to some agreement as to the permitting process and the streamlined approach we will begin construction later on this year,” said John Sondag with AT&T. “I would hope that sometime in 2015 we'll be able to offer service to the first folks.”
AT&T said areas where UVerse is available will be able to take advantage of the faster Internet. The company also said it hopes to expand Uverse’s availability.
