(KMOV) – A Wentzville man convicted of trying to shoot his ex-girlfriend in the face after breaking into her O’Fallon, Mo. home was sentenced to 30 years in prison on Thursday.
Judge Nancy Schneider sentenced 53-year-old Jerry Beatty in St. Charles County Court for domestic assault, armed criminal action and first-degree burglary.
According to court documents, Beatty went to his ex-girlfriend’s house in the 100 block of Stage Coach Landing on April 26, 2013.
Police say Beatty had a gun in his hand when he kicked in the door to her home and grabbed her by the hair. He then shoved her to the floor and pulled the trigger several times.
The handgun misfired, allowing the victim to run away. Police say Beatty caught up to her and shoved her to the floor again.
Beatty attempted to shoot the victim again but the weapon did not fire.
He then fled the scene as authorities were arriving.
Police attempted to stop Beatty but he continued to flee in an unknown vehicle. A short pursuit ensued until Beatty crashed into the center median of Interstate 70 near the Jennings Station Road exit.
He remained in custody on a $500,000 bond until Thursday’s sentencing.
Police say the victim had an order of protection against Beatty at the time of the assault. Authorities say the gun misfired because the ammunition was too humid from being stored in Beatty’s trunk.
Schneider cited Beatty’s lack of remorse and pattern of behavior as reasons for her sentencing.
