(KMOV.com) - Authorities said they arrested someone in Missouri who was transporting large amounts of drug money to Texas.
58-year-old Eliberto Mendia has been charged with interstate transportation in aid of racketeering.
Police said they received a tip from a US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agent that someone who was staying at a Drury Inn in Festus was acting suspiciously. Authorities said they then followed the man as he drove southbound on Interstate 55 in a truck that was towing a trailer before they pulled him over in Ste. Genevieve County.
Authorities said they searched the trailer and found $1.2 million in cash wrapped in 130 bundles. Authorities identified then Mendia as the driver. Court documents indicate Mendia told police he thought the money was for drugs and that he was paid $2,000 to drive it from Chicago to Texas.
Mendia appeared in court Monday and will sit in jail until the trial begins.
