(BaseballStL) – The Cardinals announced on Tuesday that shortstop Pete Kozma has been optioned to Memphis AAA in order to make room for infielder Mark Ellis.

Ellis had been on the 15-day disabled list due to tendinitis in his left knee. Ellis went 1-3 over five innings at second base during a rehab start in Memphis on Sunday.

Ellis, 36, appeared in 12 games during spring training. He was signed by the Cardinals to a one-year free-agent contract in December. The right-handed hitting Ellis is a veteran of 11-plus seasons in the majors, and faced the Cardinals in the NLCS while playing second for the Dodgers last season.

Kozma was the Cardinals starting shortstop in 2013. The 26-year-old from Tulsa appeared in four games this season getting a hit in three at bats.
