(BaseballStL) -- It’s not perfect.  But in sports you never really have to be.  Tony La Russa was fond of saying “either you do or  you don’t”.  And for Cardinals closer Trevor Rosenthal right now, it doesn’t always look pretty, but he’s getting the job done.

Rosenthal picked up his 4th save of the 2014 season against the Cubs but surrendered a pair of hits and a run in the process.  He needed 25 pitches to get through the 9th inning.

“Obviously I would’ve liked to get it done a little easier but I’m just happy to get out of here with a win,” Rosenthal said after the Cardinals 6-4 win.

The closer’s ERA is actually a whopping 7.36 at the moment.

“He’s just not as sharp,” Mike Matheny said. “That’s not something you see him to very often.  He just needs to get a little confidence going and make those tough pitches when he needs to.”

“It’s part of the game. It happens,” Rosenthal said. “I’d like to go out there and throw three pitches every time but sometimes you have to battle a little bit and things don’t go your way. That’s the name of the game and that’s why we play.”

Matheny says Rosenthal’s breaking ball is much improved from last year.  They’re just waiting for his fastball command to come around a little bit more.
