Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel spoke publicly today for the first time since announcing he had kicked star wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham off the team for off the field issues stemming from the past week.
Pinkel says he discussed his thought process with athletic director Mike Alden but ultimately that’s not who made the call.
“It’s up to me to make the decision and I made the decision,” Gary Pinkel said today after practice. “Number one we wanted to help Dorial get better. That’s really important. I also have to protect the integrity of the program.
“At the end of the day you have to do what’s right. I have to do what’s right. And the right thing to do isn’t to say ‘Gosh we’re losing a really good football player and we’re really going to miss him’. I would never make a decision like that,” Pinkel said.
With L’Damian Washington already gone from last year, this is yet another blow to an already young wide receiver position.
“It’s a challenge. That’s all it is and that’s all we asked for is a challenge,” Darius White said.
The big message here is for athletes in the Mizzou program to understand they have to represent the University at all times and be good examples for everyone else in Columbia.
“We’ve had some bad situations going on but it’s important to remember that on and off the field you’re always a Tiger and there’s always eyes on you so you got to behave in the right manner,” RB Marcus Murphy said.
