( – A house in Washington Park was destroyed by fire and the family says there is only one thing stopping them from getting a new home – paperwork from the fire department.

Melted siding and a charred black interior is mainly what is left of Marcia Byrd’s home on North 53rd Street. Byrd said she needs a copy of the fire report to get the government grants to afford rent, but it’s been two weeks since the fire happened.

“I’m tired of my kids sleeping on the floor,” Byrd said, “in sleeping bags.”

The fire chief told News 4 he had already given Byrd a few copies of the report and blamed the recent delay on a lack of staffing.

Byrd is hoping the city will tear down her old house to help her move on with her life, but as for her new home, she said now that she has the paperwork she can move in as soon as Monday.
