(KMOV) -- The city of East St. Louis is working to get innocent crime victims signed up for the “Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Program.”
The state program has a list of more than 22 violent crimes that will pay up to $27,000 to victims.
“This program is very underutilized, the last thing that we want to do is cut something like this,” said Francella Jackson who works for the East St. Louis Police Department.
The money comes from the state budget. People who are charged with a crime often pay fines which help to pay for the program.
Jackson said victims must fill out a police report within 48 hours and prove to police they are innocent.
To learn more, Jackson is holding a meeting at the East St. Louis City hall, Thursday, April 24th at 10 a.m.
