Molina does what Molina does in Home Opener victory

(BaseballStL) -- The Cardinals 5-3 series opening win over the Reds Monday afternoon was essentially broken open in the 1st inning.  Yadier Molina hit a bases loaded, one out double to left field off Cincinnati starter Tony Cingrani that plated three runs.

The Reds never were able to recover from that deficit.

“It’s very fitting that Yadi’s the guy to get us going right there,” Mike Matheny said. “We had a huge momentum shift there in the 1st (inning) and then it could have been just as effective the opposite way if we don’t get a run in let alone Yadi coming up big to get three (runs).”

“We were just trying to hit (Cingrani’s) fastball,” Molina said. “He’s a fastball pitcher and we were just trying to hit it.”

The All Star catcher has 12 multi-RBI games against the Reds in his career and the Cardinals are 11-1 in those games.  Everyone knows full well how incredible Molina is defensively and working with the pitchers but there still is a sense of him being underrated offensively.

The Gold Glove award winner has had several big hits in his career but is still viewed primarily for his defense.  Hits like Monday’s in the 1st inning will only shed light on what he can do at the plate.
