Bourjos hits second in hopes of sparking bat

(BaseballStL) — The two spot in the Cardinals’ order continues to be a revolving door for the home opener in St. Louis.

For the first bit of action at home, Peter Bourjos will bat second behind Matt Carpenter. Kolten Wong will bat eighth behind Jhonny Peralta.

"A lot of it is just trying to get Peter going, we gotta get him moving,” said Mike Matheny before the game. The speedy center fielder is hitless on the season in his 14 plate appearances. This comes following a spring training average of .324, and Matheny believes it’s not a matter of approach.

”It hasn’t shown up statistically, but he’s got a real nice swing going. You’re seeing some things he worked on all spring training,” the Cardinal manager said. “He’s just not getting a lot of results.”

Another compounding factor may be pressure applied from within. Matheny said before the game Bourjos has incredibly high expectations for himself, something that may be adding undue stress as he chases his first hit.

“He’s pretty demanding on himself, you see also a guy that really wants to make a good impression; not just with the fans but with his teammates and show that he brings a lot to the table. We know he does, but right now he’s pushing. He’s going to be a a guy that overworks at times and we’re going to have to harness him a little bit.”
