ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police in north St. Louis County say they are close to arresting two thieves after video surveillance at the Crown Manor Apartments revealed they were stealing rent checks by using a piece of string.

“The way this came out was the apartment manager thought the rent payments were late and contacted the victims,” said St. Louis County Police Officer Shawn McGuire.

However, each resident had made their payments, which range in amounts from $95 to $510.

“Someone had went inside the drop box and used some type of [string] to pull them up out of there,” said Robert Anderson, a resident in the apartment. “I always make sure I go into the office and pay my rent.”

Police say there were three victims in the incident and the apartment manager confirmed each one was able to get their money back.

“If you’re an occupant in one of these apartment complexes,” Officer McGuire said. “You have to pay attention on how your apartment complex handles these situations.”

Investigators say the thieves are not from Missouri and are close to making arrests. Security at the Crown Manor Apartments has also increased.

The investigation is ongoing.
